- Repair of collapsed culverts with anchored walls
Project overview
Repair of collapsed culverts on the Central Regional Highway (ARC), entrusted to Vialpa in December 2005. The work site is located at Prog. 34+566, where the works restore the roadway, the 60 kph channels and part of the shoulder. The intervention requires cast-in-place walls with two rows of active anchors, followed by the construction of a reinforced earth wall to mitigate the embankment thrust, and finally the restoration of the asphalt pavement in the area.
The Challenge
Restore the hydraulic and structural capacity of the transverse drainage works of an operating highway, stabilizing a slope with active embankment thrust without interrupting traffic on the main roadway.
Vialpa Scope
Repair of collapsed culverts at Prog. 34+566: cast-in-place walls with two rows of active anchors, construction of a reinforced earth wall to mitigate embankment thrust, and restoration of asphalt pavement, 60 kph channels and shoulder in the intervened area.
Engineering / Construction Approach
Geotechnical and roadway engineering sequence: installation of cast-in-place walls with two-row active anchors to retain the slope, subsequent construction of a reinforced earth wall to reduce the embankment thrust on the drainage works, and finally restitution of the roadway, 60 kph channels and shoulder with asphalt pavement. Phased planning kept the highway operational during execution.
Operational Constraints
Intervention on an operating highway at Prog. 34+566: traffic coordination and stabilization of the active embankment thrust through anchored walls and reinforced earth.
