Project overview

Improvement of the Trujillo Aqueduct through the installation and rehabilitation of conveyance lines and distribution networks, part of the plan to harness the hydraulic resources of the Motatán River Basin. The networks comprise 15,000 meters of ductile iron pipe, 3,000 meters of carbon steel and 7,000 meters of HDPE. Six pumping stations were constructed —Hático Alto, Hático Bajo, Estadium, Mesa de Gallardo, La Guaira and Fundación del Niño— with a combined capacity of 450 liters per second. Metal tanks were installed to increase storage capacity by 6,250,000 liters (Fundación del Niño, Hático Alto, Hático Bajo, Bella Mira, La Guaira, Mesa de Gallardo and Estadium).

The Challenge

Integrate conveyance systems, distribution networks, pumping stations and storage tanks in a mountainous geographic environment, ensuring reliable potable water supply to the city of Trujillo.

Vialpa Scope

Installation and rehabilitation of 15,000 m of ductile iron pipe, 3,000 m of carbon steel and 7,000 m of HDPE; construction of 6 pumping stations (Hático Alto, Hático Bajo, Estadium, Mesa de Gallardo, La Guaira and Fundación del Niño) with combined capacity of 450 L/s; installation of metal tanks at Fundación del Niño, Hático Alto, Hático Bajo, Bella Mira, La Guaira, Mesa de Gallardo and Estadium for 6,250,000 L of additional storage.

Engineering / Construction Approach

Hydraulic engineering integrated with electromechanical works for reliable system operation: design of conveyance lines with three different materials according to pressure and terrain requirements, pumping stations sized for 450 L/s combined and strategically distributed metal storage tanks to regulate supply.

Operational Constraints

Hydraulic harnessing of the Motatán River Basin: integration of conveyance, pumping and storage into a coordinated continuous-service system.
