“Virgen de Coromoto” Water Treatment Plant
Project sheet
- Sector
- Water
- Location
- Guanare, Portuguesa State, Venezuela
- Year
- 2001
- Vialpa Role
- Water treatment plant construction and electromechanical works
Project overview
The “Virgen de Coromoto” Water Treatment Plant has the capacity to treat 1,500 liters per second of raw water. It features an aeration cascade that reduces organic matter and oxidizes reducing compounds such as iron and magnesium ions; four pulsating sludge-bed settlers (super pulsators); and five ABW filters with a self-cleaning cell design that saves water, air and energy. It also includes chlorine storage and dosing facilities, pumps and compressors, an emergency power generation plant, and administrative areas housing the Water Quality Control Laboratory. Its commissioning guarantees the water supply for Guanare and surrounding areas until the year 2050.
The Challenge
Build a treatment plant capable of processing 1,500 L/s of raw water using pulsating sedimentation and self-cleaning filtration technology, ensuring a sustainable supply for Guanare and surrounding areas until the year 2050.
Vialpa Scope
Construction of the complete treatment plant: aeration cascade, four pulsating sludge-bed settlers (super pulsators), five self-cleaning ABW filters, chlorine storage and dosing facilities, pumps and compressors, emergency power generation plant, administrative areas and the Water Quality Control Laboratory.
Engineering / Construction Approach
Integration of advanced treatment processes —aeration, pulsating sedimentation and ABW self-cleaning filtration— with coordinated civil and electromechanical works to optimize water, air and energy consumption, and ensure treated-water quality through the Quality Control Laboratory.
Operational Constraints
The plant had to guarantee drinking-water supply for Guanare and surrounding areas with a projection to the year 2050, requiring long-term operational reliability and redundancy through the emergency power generation plant.
