Project overview
Rehabilitation of Runway 09-27 at the country's main airport. The most significant activities included the demolition and reconstruction of fractured slabs at the threshold of Runway 09 and the repair of a large depression at intermediate progressions —removing asphalt pavement, bases and contaminated soil— and reconstructing bases and asphalt pavement with appropriate materials according to ICAO regulations.
The Challenge
Execute rehabilitation works on the main runway of the country's most important international airport, under ICAO standards and without compromising airport operations.
Vialpa Scope
Demolition and reconstruction of fractured slabs at the threshold of Runway 09; repair of intermediate depression with removal of asphalt pavement, bases and contaminated soil; and reconstruction of bases and asphalt pavement according to ICAO regulations.
Engineering / Construction Approach
Phased intervention coordinated with airport operations, ensuring compliance with ICAO standards for runway rehabilitation.
Operational Constraints
Execution within an operational international airport, with coordination of access and aeronautical work windows.
Technical Highlights
- Demolition and reconstruction of fractured slabs at the threshold of Runway 09
- Repair of intermediate depression: removal of pavement, bases and contaminated soil
- Reconstruction of bases and asphalt pavement according to ICAO regulations
- Executed investment: US$2.9 million under strict aeronautical operational coordination
Key Quantities

Longitudinal perspective of Runway 09-27 toward the Caribbean Sea at twilight: approach lighting system, threshold and ICAO-compliant markings

Pouring and surface finishing of high-strength rigid hydraulic concrete airfield slabs at the runway threshold with specialized crew and steel formwork

Deep excavation and contaminated subsoil removal for intermediate depression remediation: crawler excavator, dozer, and geotechnical grade control

Structural steel rebar mesh installation and dowel bar placement for load transfer across newly reconstructed airfield pavement slabs

Active airfield operations front: motor grader, concrete mixers, and modular slab demolition/reconstruction sequence in front of radar and control towers
